Contact investigation
National TB Management Guidelines, 2018 Edition. Chapter 3, Systematic TB screening in high risk groups.
Clinical description
3.4.1 Identif ication of contacts of an index TB case Contact tracing and investigation should be conducted for household or other close contacts of the index TB case. Priority should be given when the index TB case has either:
- pulmonary TB
- presumptive or confirmed drug-resistant TB
- HIV, or
- Children under 5 years of age.
The initial identification and evaluation of identified contacts for active TB should be conducted using the symptomatic TB screening algorithm except for under five children who are automatically categorized as presumptive TB cases and should enter the diagnostic pathway.
Contact tracing should be initiated by the TB focal persons as soon as the index case is registered to receive TB treatment. It is advised that community health workers/volunteers should be asked to conduct identification of contacts and refer those who require detailed evaluation and investigation to the health facility.
