Clinical description
LTK is a school-based malaria case management intervention implemented as part of the basic first aid kit for school going children. It is an intervention provided by trained teachers during school operational hours.
The aim is to increase access to malaria diagnosis and treatment. Studies in Zomba and Karonga conducted in 2015 and 2022 respectively demonstrated a high (60% in Zomba and 58% in Karonga) prevalence rate of malaria among school going children. In view of these developments, the MOH recommends the use of available effective first line treatments for implementation of LTK interventions in primary schools.
Teachers are trained for five days on how to effectively test and treat only uncomplicated malaria cases. Following the training, they are equipped with mRDTs, first line antimalarial drugs and reporting tools.
