National TB Management Guidelines, 2018 Edition. Chapter 1, INTRODUCTION.
Clinical description
The development of this national strategic plan (NSP) was necessitated by preliminary findings from the national TB prevalence survey of a higher TB prevalence of 363/100,000 compared to the previous estimated prevalence of 135/100,000 by WHO. This plan was informed by several processes, including a WHO-led mini programme review of April 2014, a stakeholders meeting of July 2014 and an epidemiological assessment conducted in August 2014. The development was also informed by other global initiatives such as the WHO Post-2015 Global TB Strategy (End TB Strategy)1.
This new NSP provides an opportunity for the integration of the HIV and TB programs to improve service delivery between the two disease control programs as well as other health sector programs such MNCH, chronic care, SRH and key affected populations such as prisoners.
The interventions which will be implemented under this NSP are organized under 4 main pillars, based on the WHO Post-2015 Global TB Strategy and adapted to fit with national priorities and related national results frameworks. The four pillars of this NSP are:

National Tuberculosis Control Programme 13 1. Integrated case finding and patient centred TB diagnosis, treatment, care and support.
2. TB/HIV Collaboration and Integration.
3. Prevention and impact mitigation.
4. Program management.
Other considerations in the development of this NSP included national and international strategic developments, orientations and commitments. The Post-2015 Global TB Strategy targets are used as a basis for setting national targets for each of the four pillars. This NSP is a comprehensive plan of intent to control TB during the period 2015 to 2020. It is a framework that will guide the actions of MoH and other decision-makers and implementers within the government and non-governmental sectors, both national and international, whose duties touch on TB control in the country. It should be the main guide for funding agencies considering investment for TB control in Malawi during the specified period.
