Mild to Moderate Pneumonia
Malawi Standard Treatment Guidelines, 6th Edition, 2023. Chapter 16, Respiratory Conditions.
Clinical Description
- Usually caused by pneumococcus (sudden onset)
- Mild symptoms.
- Mild CURB-65 score: 0-1
- Moderate: CURB-65 score: 2-3
Treatment
- Give Amoxycillin 500mg 8 hourly for 5-7 days
If Penicillin allergic
- Give Erythromycin 500mg 6 hourly for 5-7 days
- Give Doxycycline 100mg 12 hourly for 5 -7 days
Note: If the patient does not improve, consider alternative diagnoses.
